Details

The European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) is a directorate of the Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg, France. It plays a key role in public health by developing quality standards for medicines, blood transfusion, organ transplantation, and other healthcare areas. One of its core responsibilities is the European Pharmacopoeia, which provides legally binding quality standards for medicines across Europe and beyond. In addition, the EDQM provides scientific expertise, laboratory testing, certification of pharmaceutical substances, and guidance to ensure safe and effective healthcare practices.

The EDQM’s mission is to protect public health by ensuring access to medicines and healthcare of the highest quality and safety standards. Its values are built on scientific integrity, independence, transparency, and collaboration across European member states and international partners. With over 60 member countries and observers worldwide, the EDQM is recognised as a global leader in standard-setting for pharmaceuticals and healthcare practices. Its leadership comes from its ability to harmonise standards across borders, support innovation in public health, and provide trusted expertise that strengthens the safety and reliability of medical products used by millions of people.
