EirGrid is Ireland’s state-owned company responsible for developing, managing, and operating the national high-voltage electricity transmission system.
It ensures that power is delivered reliably from where it is generated to where it is needed across homes, businesses, schools, farms, and hospitals throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland. As the Transmission System Operator (TSO) and part of the Single Electricity Market Operator with SONI, EirGrid balances supply and demand every minute of the day and runs the wholesale electricity market that underpins competition in the sector.
The company is central to Ireland’s climate ambitions, leading efforts to make the electricity grid capable of carrying a high proportion of renewable energy and supporting a transition to a low-carbon future.
EirGrid also develops critical interconnection projects that link Ireland’s grid with neighboring countries, enhancing energy security and integration of clean energy sources.
