Job Description
We are looking for a motivated, decisive, practical and detail-oriented Indirect Tax Manager to join our team in the Tallinn office! Our Tax team makes sure that we operate policies and governance procedures that seek to ensure we comply with tax laws in every territory we do business. With a high level of autonomy and responsibility, you’ll work across teams at Wise to manage and oversee our Indirect Tax Compliance function.
Your mission:
- Manage end to end Indirect Tax compliance (with support within an existing team of 5) across 30+ markets with advisor support, whilst also developing the Indirect Tax knowledge of other team members. There may be some requirement to prepare returns depending on team capacity and annual leave.
- Support the Head of Indirect Tax and Indirect Tax Senior Manager in global compliance transformation which will involve extending automation across the Indirect Tax compliance function to ensure that Wise’s Indirect Tax team has a compliance model which is scalable and fit for the future.
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of Indirect Tax compliance processes and controls over indirect tax, working with support to ensure returns are standardised and documented, so that the team can focus its time more effectively on other value-add activities.
- Support on Indirect Tax implementation work to ensure that new entities / markets are identified in real time, entities are registered on time and the appropriate data is made available within the Tax team to allow compliance returns to be completed in a timely manner. There will be support for this aspect.
- Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders within the business, bridging the gap between ever changing business needs and compliance cycles. This may involve projects such as ensuring that the Indirect Tax team has at its fingertips the key data it requires to manage its indirect tax filings as they fall due (e.g. customer transaction data required per territory with appropriate parameters captured in reports).
- Continue to broaden our external network in working efficiently and pragmatically whilst managing relationships with multiple advisors. There is also the opportunity to expand consulting skills within this role as you work with overseas advisors to develop your global VAT understanding in relation to new products / commercial offerings in both new and existing markets.
- There is also the opportunity to work with the Head of Indirect Tax and the Indirect Tax Senior Manager on broader Indirect Tax consulting opportunities depending on the successful candidate’s desire and capacity.
- Be an engaged, pragmatic and pro-active member of the tax team, helping to make indirect tax more accessible and understood across tax and the wider business, including providing training and advice to relevant finance teams, who you will work closely with. You will have the support of both the Head of Indirect Tax and the Indirect Tax Senior Manager for these aspects of the role.
- Supporting the Head of Indirect Tax and Indirect Tax Senior Manager in managing and reporting indirect tax risks, tax provisions, and risk incidences which require escalation and helping to communicate these with relevant stakeholders.

Qualifications
- You’re placed in Tallinn, Estonia; and have a right to work here (we won’t be able to support you with a visa nor relocation for this role).
- You have at least 4 years indirect tax experience with either big 4 or in-house and have a solid understanding of UK and/or EU VAT and cross border indirect tax principles - financial services indirect taxation highly desirable but not essential.
- Able to understand and support in the design of processes and controls to manage compliance obligations and risks associated with large volumes of complex data.
- You are a self-starter who is able to organise your own time and work but you also have the ability to work with and influence stakeholders on indirect tax matters.
- You take ownership of complex new areas and are able to solve problems with limited guidance, assuming responsibility and using your own judgement in terms of decision making.
- You demonstrate attention to details and are comfortable dealing with large volumes of complex information.
