What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Your role

The Audiovisual Archives Officer will be within the General Archives team part of a group of two experts taking care of the ICRC’s audiovisual archives. The primary purpose of this newly defined role is to spearhead the modernization of ICRC’s audio-visual archives, transitioning from legacy storage models to a dynamic, AI-integrated Digital Asset Management (DAM) ecosystem as part of a larger Digital Archive.

This role serves as the critical bridge between content production, archival science, and data engineering. This expert will be responsible for designing automated workflows for data ingest, contributing to the semantic enrichment of content through Artificial Intelligence (AI) based on the ICRC ontology, and ensuring the long-term preservation and discoverability of ICRC’s multimedia assets.

Main activities & functional responsibilities

Archive Workflows

Implement the roadmap for audiovisual legacy formats and migrating digital assets into a centralized long-term preservation (LTP) system.
Analyze and optimize end-to-end multimedia workflows in collaboration with content producers and the teams building the LTP. Apply Business Process Analysis to identify inefficiencies and automate manual tasks where feasible.
Implement, and enforce file naming conventions, and archival standards (e.g., PREMIS) to ensure data integrity and authenticity, legal compliance (GDPR, et.al.), and long-term storage with sustainable formats.

Advanced Data Management

Contribute to the integration of Artificial Intelligence services (e.g., Speech to Text, Facial Recognition, etc.) into the archival workflow.
Establish and manage quality control processes to audit and correct AI-generated metadata, mitigating algorithmic bias before data enters the LTP.
Apply the ICRC Ontology and enable feeding AV-metadata into the Knowledge Graph.
Oversee the full lifecycle of AV-metadata—technical, descriptive, and administrative—ensuring interoperability with internal systems via standard schemas (e.g., Dublin Core, RiC).

Technical Implementation

Perform technical quality control on incoming media assets. Execute, if needed, basic video editing tasks using appropriate tools to facilitate rapid access requests.
Act as super-user for audios, videos, and photos arriving at the LTP, troubleshooting user issues, and contributing to the management of user access rights, as well as testing of new deliveries by T&I and working on specs for potential improvements.

Stakeholder Enablement

Serve as a diplomat between technical teams, creative teams, and the archivists. Translate technical AV-archival requirements into production-friendly workflows.
Prepare workshops in collaboration with information and change management to train and inform internal stakeholders on best practices for audiovisual entry and system usage.

Education and Experience required

Bachelor’s or master's degree in Computer Science, or Business Informatics, or Information Management, or Media Technology, or a related field.
Certifications in Digital Asset Management (DAM) or Project Management (PMP, Agile/Scrum) are highly advantageous.
Proven knowledge in data protection and copyright.
3-5 years of professional experience, for instance, in a media or broadcast environment, image agency, post-production facility, or digital archive or library.
Proven track record in working with at least one MAM/DAM system.
Demonstrated experience implementing or managing AI/ML workflows for media (transcription, auto-tagging) is strongly preferred. Experience of agile working (SCRUM) is an asset.
Experience with Metadata Standards (DublinCore, PREMIS, RiC-CM) and using taxonomies and ontologies is a clear advantage.

Desired profile

The ideal candidate is a "Hybrid Specialist"—part Data Engineer, part Information Manager, and part post-production support.

Skills and Competencies:

Strong understanding of AV formats, codecs (e.g. ProRes, DNxHD, H.264/H.265), containers, and transcoding tools (e.g. FFmpeg) and functional proficiency in Editing Suites (like Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve) to understand editorial workflows and perform simple cuts.
Understanding Machine Learning and AI concepts, confidence scores, and the ability to evaluate the quality of AI outputs. Knowledge in coding is seen as an asset.
Ability to understand complex data models (Ontologies) and process maps (business analysis).
Strong organizational project management skills with a pro-active mindset for continuous improvement (Agile/Lean methodologies) combined with an obsession regarding data accuracy and consistency.
Excellent command of Business English (written and verbal). Ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical creative staff diplomatically. Understanding French is mandatory, speaking French is an asset.

Relationships

Internally, interacts with users, business process owners and heads of programmes in HQ and coordinators in the field.
Externally, May interacts with organisations that provide external data, in coordination with CIM_CORP_TRAK.
