What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

The Child Protection FO is responsible for the implementation of child protection activities in the Maiduguri SD. S/he contributes to the coherence of (CRC's response to the protection needs of children affected by the NIAC in the Northeast of Nigeria. S/he focuses on identifying, analyzing and addressing CP issues across all protection files (PCP, PFL, Detention), in line with the delegation's CP strategy and keeping in mind the transversality of the file within Protection, Prevention and Assistance

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

In hand with the Child Protection delegate, contribute to the understanding of the delegation regarding child protection needs, institutions and policies in NE Nigeria. This will be done through field, discussions with affected communities, participation in multidisciplinary assessments and engagement with other stakeholders focusing on already identified issues to ensure that their rights are protected.
Regular analysis of issues affecting children, identification of objectives, priorities among them and proposing 1CRC's responses, whenever needed.
Has a solid understanding and analysis of ongoing other programmes for affected children and establishes a referral pathway. As required, coordinates/work with other Stakeholders (UNICEF, UNHCR, MoWASD, and local NGOs) to support to children affected by the conflict.
Fosters communication with other departments to ensure a multidisciplinary response to children victims of the conflict, as per the Delegation's strategy.
Reports and follows up of Child Protection issues, individual cases.
When necessary, plans and organizes field trips for Child Protection related activities with full autonomy in accordance with set priorities and strategy.
Travels in the field for assessments and meetings with interlocutors, if security allows.
In support of other protection programmes, participates in case documentation, collection of information and analysis as well as response on PROT concerns re: children (i.e. PCP, DET, missing & RFL cases) in MIU Sub Delegation AoR.
Supports with conducting individual and collective interviews with stakeholders and beneficiaries, namely CAAFAG, IDP children and other vulnerable children.
Produces regular qualitative reporting and writes the minutes and Field Trip Reports after meetings and field trips.
Reports on the implementation of projects and prepares written reporting to be submitted to the Deputy Protection Coordinator and Child Protection delegate for technical support.
Produces data and situation analysis in order to ensure effectiveness and relevancy of ICRC activities.

Certifications / Education required

University degree in a relevant field, preferably in the field of law or social work
4 years' experience in Protection/Tracing with very good knowledge of Child Protection guidelines, protocols, laws and procedures
Experience working with children facing armed conflict related vulnerabilities/protection concerns
Excellent written and spoken English, Hausa, Kanuri
Good computer skills: knowledge in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Represents the organization properly with different level of interlocutors.
Sound analytical skills, Good knowledge of the Area of Responsibility - AoR (Political, cultural and geographical)
